How to start and keep up your daily practice.
As part of my Kundalini Yoga Teacher training and development as a student of Kundalini Yoga I started a 40 day practice on January 1st. I had started a few times last year and stopped because of various reasons but this time I am determined to get through it.
I try to do my meditation every morning as I feel it starts my day beautifully. However, like today, I am going to do it tonight before bed and will use it as a time to reflect and show gratitude for the day I've had.
In Kundalini Yoga we use these daily practices to shift and break habits. A habit is a subconscious chain reaction between the mind, the glandular system and the nervous system. We develop habits at a very young age, some of them serve our highest destiny however some do not. By using the following daily practices for the same length of time every day for 40, 90, 120 or 1000 days you can rewire that chain reaction. I am working up to 40 days and can then go on to do 90, 120 or 1000 days! Below are the benefits of each stage:
40 Days: This will break any negative habits that block you from the expansion possible through the Kriya or mantra. This is great for beating habits and addictions and having something to focus on each day. Even if you don't get much else done in the day, at least you know you did your practice and did something for YOU. For me, it feels like a clearing away and making space which feels so liberating.
90 Days: This will establish a new habit in your conscious and subconscious minds based on the effect of the Kriya or mantra. It will change you in a very deep way. If you imagine in the 40 days you were making space for the expansion in your life, when you build up to the 90 days it's like planting the seed of a new habit.
120 Days: This will confirm the new habit of consciousness created by the Kriya or mantra. The positive benefits of the Kriya get integrated permanently into your psyche. This is the point where that seed blossoms into life within you. It has been nurtured by your daily commitment and dedication and is flourishing. It then stays within you like and imprint on your physical and subtle bodies.
1000 Days: This will allow you to master the new habit of consciousness that the Kriya or mantra has promised. After a 1000 days or 2 Years, 8 Months, 3 Weeks, 5 Days, 11 Hours, 33 Minutes and 19 Seconds you will have mastered the new habit in your life and can use it to serve you, no matter what challenges you face.
It's now day 14 of my practice and I am finding it a brilliant way of anchoring and grounding myself. It's lovely to have something that is the same everyday and setting that time aside to tune in to myself and my thoughts. For the past five years I have always started each new year living in London with a secure job. This year I have started 2019 without that job security, back in East Sussex and trying to create a freelance lifestyle. This 40 day practice is helping me to stay grounded through all of these changes. It's helping to keep my mind focused and my creativity flowing. It's also helping break my habitual thought patterns, I'm not even sure exactly which thoughts are being worked through, but I know I am starting to think differently and boy, it feels good!!
